What is Meck Connect?

Meck Connect is where it all comes together. All the plans and all the communities together to help Mecklenburg County move. Move more people, more places. Meck Connect integrates road improvements, expanded rail, better bus and microtransit into one, unified plan. A plan to help everyone get where they need to go.

Roads and road infrastructure for Mecklenburg County

  • Building and improving roads.
  • Traffic safety improvements and walkable spaces (sidewalks, streetlights, cross walks).
  • Smart traffic signals and real-time traffic monitoring (getting traffic to move and reducing congestion).
  • Enhanced intersections, crosswalks and sidewalks in urban and suburban areas.

CATS Transit System Plan

The system plan includes:

  • 43 miles of new rail.
  • 50% increase in bus service.
  • Improved bus stops and shelters.
  • 18 new Microtransit zones.

25 miles of new commuter rail, 6 miles of new streetcar, 12 miles of new light rail

  • Red Line: Commuter rail connecting Uptown to North Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson.
  • Silver Line: Light rail from the airport to the Coliseum/Ovens connecting East and West Charlotte.
  • Gold Line: Extension from Rosa Parks Place to Eastland.
  • Blue Line: Extension from I-485 to Carolina Place/Pineville.
  • Future Extensions: Silver Line extension to Matthews/CPCC Levine, Blue Line extension to Ballantyne.

Proposed Investments in Better Bus

  • 50% increase in service.
  • 450,000 more riders will access 15-minute frequency within a ten-minute walk.
  • 2,000 bus stops with shelters, benches and/or waiting pads.
  • 15-minute frequency on the top 15 routes and 30-minute frequency on all routes
  • Expanded hours on weekdays and weekends.

Proposed Expansion of Microtransit

  • Additional 18 Microtransit zones (total of 19) covering more than 100 square miles across Mecklenburg County.
  • Curb-to-curb, on-demand service to places our community relies on—grocery stores, health clinics, schools, and jobs.

Spurs Economic Opportunity

It is anticipated that four of every five residents and nearly every job will be within microtransit zone, or a 10-minute walk of a bus/rail route based on the proposed plan. More than 938,700 residents (83% of the county population) would be connected with 764,800 jobs (96% of all employment locations in the county). (Source: Charlotte Area Transit System)

1¢ Creates Funding for Transit + Roads

The image illustrates how a one-cent county sales tax would be allocated over 30 years based on current revenue projections. Spending is divided as follows: 40% for Road Improvements, totaling $138 million in Year 1 and $7.8 billion over 30 years; 20% for Bus & Microtransit, totaling $69 million in Year 1 and $3.8 billion over 30 years; and 40% for Rail Construction, also totaling $138 million in Year 1 and $7.8 billion over 30 years.
