Strategic Investment Areas – Mobility Upgrades

Charlotte has designated 22 Strategic Investment Areas (SIAs) for focused mobility upgrades including new streets, road capacity increases, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, lighting, streetscapes, intersection improvements, and traffic signal synchronization.

Key Transit System Plan Details:

  • Expanded Rail:
    • Red Line: Commuter rail connecting Uptown to North Mecklenburg, Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson.
    • Silver Line: Light rail from close to the airport to the Bojangles Coliseum connecting East and West Charlotte.
    • Blue Line: Light rail extension from I-485 to Carolina Place in Pineville.
    • Gold Line: Streetcar extension extending west to Rosa Parks Place and east to Eastland Yards.
    • Future extensions include the Silver Line to Matthews and the Blue Line to Ballantyne.
  • Better Bus:
    • 50% increase in service.
    • Top 15 routes improved to 15-minute frequency.
    • All other routes improved to 30-minute frequency.
    • Upgrades to more than 2,000 bus stops.
    • Expanded hours on weekdays and weekends.
  • Microtransit:
    • New on-demand, curb-to-curb ride share service.
    • Multiple zones across Charlotte area providing new connections for residents to get to places they rely on like jobs, health care, grocery stores, and more. Find the Microtransit zone closest to you.
